Bishop to Celebrate Mass for Memorial Day This Saturday at Holy Saviour Cemetery

Bishop Alfred Schlert will celebrate Mass on the grounds of Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem on Saturday, May 28 at 10 a.m., in commemoration of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day this year is Monday, May 30. It is a federal holiday dedicated to mourning those who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The public is invited to attend the Mass and pray for deceased relatives and all who have sacrificed their lives for our country.

In the event of inclement weather, please contact the office at Holy Saviour Cemetery at 610-866-2372 ext. 3.

Holy Saviour is one of two diocesan cemeteries. The other is Resurrection Cemetery, 547 N. Krocks Rd., Allentown.

“Burial in the Catholic cemetery is a vivid reminder of the Resurrection that awaits each of us with the disposition of the body or cremated remains in a grave, niche or mausoleum,” said Monsignor William Baver, diocesan director of cemeteries.

“Every burial in a Catholic cemetery proclaims the sacredness of life. The buried or entombed remains are signs of meaningful acts of faith by the Christian community. We believe that life is not consumed by death. The Christian does not fear death but rather only the incompleteness of our life that only can be fulfilled in heaven,” he said.

Here is a prayer that you may want to use for Memorial Day:

God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women
who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely
into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Holy Saviour Cemetery is located at 2575 Linden St., Bethlehem.
