Beware of ‘Cancel Culture’ that Tries to Cancel Christian Beliefs, Archbishop Gomez Says

The rise of new secular ideologies and movements for social change create both challenges and opportunities for our Church, says Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles.

It’s important to realize, Archbishop Gomez said, that in “cancel culture” and “political correctness,” often what is being canceled and corrected are Christian beliefs about human life, the human person, marriage, and family.

The Church needs to engage these “de-Christianization” movements not on social or political terms, “but as dangerous substitutes for true religion,” he said.

Archbishop Gomez, who currently serves as the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, also listed evangelical priorities for the Catholic Church as it confronts the realities of the present moment.
