Diocese Names New Superintendent of Catholic Education

Following an extensive search, Bishop Alfred Schlert and the Diocesan Board of Education have named a lifelong Catholic educator as the new Superintendent of Catholic Education, replacing Dr. Philip J. Fromuth, who is retiring.

Michael St. Pierre, Ed.D. has been named as the Fifth Superintendent of Catholic Education effective Aug. 1, 2023.

Dr. St. Pierre has served for the past seven years as Executive Director of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, leading over 600 members at 350 colleges and universities across the country. His other leadership positions include President of Morris Catholic High School, Denville, N.J.; Dean of Students and Department Chair of Oratory Preparatory School, Summit, N.J.; and Director of Campus Ministry of Archbishop Curley High School, Baltimore, Md.

Dr. St. Pierre earned a Doctor of Education Degree from the College of St. Elizabeth, a Master’s Degree in Educational Policy and Leadership from Seton Hall University, a Master’s Degree in Theology from Seton Hall University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from The Catholic University of America. He and his family are members of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Parish, Easton.

Dr. St. Pierre will oversee the management, supervision, and direction of all educational programs of the Diocese, exclusive of those conducted at DeSales University and Alvernia University.

“As we mark this time of transition, I express my profound gratitude to Dr. Fromuth, who will retire as our Superintendent of Catholic Education at the end of August,” said Bishop Schlert. “Phil has served our Diocesan school system for 43 years, the past 21 as Superintendent. We thank him for his dedicated service and leadership and wish him well as he begins this new phase in his life.”

Dr. St. Pierre will work with Dr. Fromuth throughout August for a smooth transition in preparation for the new school year opening Monday, Aug. 28.

“Please join me in welcoming Dr. St. Pierre to the Diocese of Allentown and extending our prayerful best wishes as he joins the Diocesan leadership team, and congratulating Dr. Fromuth as he begins this new phase in his life,” said Bishop Schlert.

He also expressed his “deep appreciation to the Diocesan Board of Education, for their dedicated and diligent efforts throughout the search and selection processes for this crucial position for our Diocese.”
